The educational practices carried out at the Soka Amazon Institute were highlighted at the 4th ANGEL (Academic Network on Global Education and Learning) International Conference 2023, held at the headquarters of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), in Paris, on the last 19th.
The international education researcher and associate professor at the State University of New York, PhD Namrata Sharma, presented her studies on the value creating (in Japanese, Soka) approach to environmental education promoted at the Institute in the Amazon.
In the expert’s evaluation, both formal and non-formal education are fundamental for the development of critical skills in students. According to her, educational approaches based on human values can stimulate behavior for constructive global change.
Namrata Sharma described the relevance of the Soka Amazon Institute for sustainability education and global citizenship are manifold, including its mandate to preserve biodiversity in the Amazon, highlighting 3 aspects:
– its performance as an SDG hub, promoting the engagement of enterprises to achieve the UN Sustainable Development Goals.
– in its ethos, which is an enactment of the founder’s vision for harmonious coexistence of all life;
– and through its commitment to the Earth Charter and values-based approaches to sustainability.

The 4th edition of the ANGEL Conference has a theme as Global education & learning for a just, peaceful & sustainable world. The event is organized by the Academic Network on Global Education and Learning(ANGEL) in partnership with the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), Global Education Network Europe (GENE), Institute and Faculty of Education and Society at University College London (UCL) and the NESCO Chair in Global Citizenship Education in Higher Education, based at the University of Bologna.
