Workshop for practical science and environmental education in Brazilian Amazon

A collaboration between Soka University, IFAM and Soka Amazon Institute

On Monday, March 6th, the opening ceremony of the Workshop on Practical Sciences and Environmental Education in the Amazon took place. The initiative is the result of a joint action between the Federal Institute of Amazonas (IFAM), the Soka Amazon Institute and the Soka University.

The purpose of the workshop is to promote the exchange of knowledge between students and professors from both institutions, and to contribute to the development of research in fields of great importance to the Amazon region, such as water, soil, and light.

Several authorities attended the ceremony, such as the president of IFAM, Prof. Dr. Jaime Cavalcante Alves, the dean of research, graduation and innovation, Prof. Dr. Jucimar Brito de Souza, the president director of the Soka Amazon Institute, Mr. Luciano Nascimento, the representative of the SokaUniversity, Prof. Dr. Shinjiro Sato, and the director of the IFAM Manaus Center Campus, Prof. Edson Valente Chaves.


Partnership for Education and Preservation of the Amazon

Luciano Nascimento emphasized the importance of the partnership with IFAM and stated that the mission of the Soka Institute is to support scientific research and environmental education practices, always encouraging a more harmonious relationship between human beings and nature. “Thus, we contribute to the preservation of the Amazon, which is one of the dreams of the Institute’s founder, Dr. Daisaku Ikeda. And recalled the conferral of honorary doctorate granted by IFAM to Dr. Ikeda in 2010.

Prof. Dr. Shinjiro Sato,Soka University, expressed the wish to students conclude the Workshop broadening their know ledge of how nature works and how much we need to preserve it.

“We wish them to discover their potential and become great scientists and great leaders in society to contribute to the conservation of the Amazon ecosystem.”

For thepresident of IFAM, Professor Dr. Jaime Cavalcante Alves, the initiative is very important for IFAM, Soka Institute, and Soka University, because it brings to gether academic knowledge to scientific practice. The out comes with the scientific practices, according to him, will guide preservation actions to be more effective, and the winners are the students, the institutions and the society in general. “Our board will support every action in this direction because this is not an expenditures, but an investment in education and in preservation”,hes aid.
